‘The item changed or is busy. Refresh and try again’ (409) / not found (404)

You might be here because: “The item changed or is busy. Refresh and try again.” · “The requested item was not found. Refresh and try again.” · “409 conflict” · “404 not found” · “Resource not found” · “turn_in_progress” · “another client is taking over” · “the profile disappeared” · “my script gets 409 when it launches the same profile twice”

Short answer

A 409 means the item you acted on is in a state that does not allow the action right now — it changed under you, or something else is using it — and a 404 means it is not there under your account any more. The app says “The item changed or is busy. Refresh and try again.” for the first and “The requested item was not found. Refresh and try again.” for the second. Refresh the list, look at the item’s current state, then act on what you see.

Check first

  • Refresh. Both sentences say that what the app shows is stale.
  • Is the item in use? A profile with a live session, or a session mid-task, refuses a second action until the first ends.
  • Right account or workspace? A Help conversation from another account, for example, is reported as not found rather than forbidden.

Likely causes and fixes

  1. Specific 409s have their own sentence. “End the profile’s other live session before launching it again.” (profile in use) and “Profile storage is full…” (storage quota) are 409s the app names precisely; a device that is not offered right now gets the held-device sentence rather than “changed or busy”.
  2. Two clients acting on one session. A takeover already in flight, or a mode change the session cannot make, is a 409. Wait for the other client to finish, or hand back.
  3. AI message while a turn is running. The API answers 409 with turn_in_progress: true, or with session_status closed (and closed_reason) or paused when the session is not active. With an idempotency key, in_progress means the same request is still being resolved: check the transcript rather than sending a new key.
  4. 404 from a list that was open a while. The profile was deleted (it may be in the trash), the session ended, or it belongs to a workspace you have since left. Refresh; restore from the trash if that is where it went.
  5. From the API. conflict carries a detail saying which state blocked the action, and not-found says “Resource not found.” Neither is retryable unchanged.

If it still fails

If refreshing shows the item in a state that should allow the action and the 409 persists, press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include the item (profile or session id), the exact sentence, the time, and for the API the response detail. A missing item a person can only confirm as deleted or moved.
