Assistant says off-topic, length limit (12 turns / 1,500 chars), too many messages, unavailable
You might be here because: “the assistant says it can only help with driftstack” · “this conversation has reached its length limit” · “messages can be up to 1500 characters” · “too many messages just now” · “the assistant is unavailable right now” · “the chat stopped answering” · “outside the acceptable use policy” · “goes against driftstack’s acceptable use policy”
Short answer
Where the assistant is switched on (it can be off on a deployment), when it can’t answer it says why with a fixed sentence. Most are limits, not faults: 12 messages per conversation, 1,500 characters per message, and per-day caps. Start a new conversation, shorten the message, or wait — and you can ask for a person at any time.
Check first
- Is the question about Driftstack? It refuses anything else.
- Message under 1,500 characters (6,000 bytes)?
- Has this chat already had 12 messages?
Likely causes and fixes
- “I can only help with questions about Driftstack. You can ask a person at any time.” Off-topic; rephrase around Driftstack.
- “This looks like a security, privacy, legal or abuse report. Reports go to a person…” By design no AI reads these; use Talk to a person and the report goes to the right mailbox.
- “Messages can be up to 1500 characters.” Shorten and resend.
- “This conversation has reached its length limit. Start a new one, or ask a person.” 12 messages per conversation.
- “Too many messages just now. Please wait a little, or ask a person.” You hit a per-minute or per-day cap. Wait, or sign in for the higher caps; the numbers are in Assistant limits for visitors vs signed-in customers; API keys cannot use it.
- “The assistant is unavailable right now. You can ask a person instead.” Either the service’s budget for the period is used up or it’s switched off. Use Help or email; see Assistant not configured.
- “I can’t help with that: it goes against Driftstack’s Acceptable Use Policy…” (in the API,
blocked.reasonacceptable_use; the API’s own sentence says “it is outside the Acceptable Use Policy”). The message asked for help with something the Acceptable Use Policy forbids, such as credential stuffing, fraud or attacking a website. Questions about using Driftstack — running many profiles, automation, collecting data, how websites see a session, captchas — are answered: if one was refused, ask it again as a question about Driftstack, or ask a person. - A second manipulation attempt closes the conversation — start a new one.
If it still fails
Use Talk to a person or Help; the limits above are fixed and no one raises them per customer.
