To change a VPN password or server address, paste the full config again

You might be here because: “to change a VPN password submit the full VPN configuration again” · “can’t edit the host of my OpenVPN proxy” · “how do I update the password on my VPN proxy” · “my provider changed the server address” · “VPN edit refused with 400”

Short answer

A VPN proxy’s password and its server address live inside its configuration (the remote line of a .ovpn, the Endpoint of a wg0.conf), and they are stored together with the keys. So you cannot change one on its own: paste the full .ovpn or wg0.conf again with the new value and save.

Check first

  • Are you signed in and online? Edits are saved to your account.
  • Do you have the complete new config from your provider (not just the new password)?

Likely causes and fixes

  1. “To change a VPN password, submit the full VPN configuration again.” You changed only the password field. Open Proxies → Edit, paste the whole config (for OpenVPN the username/password go with it), and save.
  2. “To change a VPN’s server address, submit the full VPN configuration again.” You edited host or port on a VPN row without a new config. Host and port are only the display copy of the endpoint inside the config; paste the new config and they update from it.
  3. Editing a WireGuard row shows “Paste a new wg0.conf here to replace the saved one — leave this empty to keep it.” That is the replace field; leaving it blank keeps the saved config.
  4. Nothing from the old config carries over. A resubmitted config replaces the stored key and password entirely. Make sure the new file is complete.

The server-address refusal (item 2) is recorded in your account’s audit log as proxy.move_refused, so you may see a notification about the attempt. The password-only refusal is not recorded.

If it still fails

Press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include the exact sentence and which field you changed — never the config or password.
