‘AI isn’t included on this account’s current plan’

You might be here because: “AI isn’t included on this account’s current plan” · “can’t start an AI session” · “the agent won’t run, says something about my plan” · “403 ai_not_on_plan” · “turning on bundled AI is refused” · “AI not working”

Short answer

The account’s plan has no AI agent at all, so AI is refused on every source — including your own provider key. Two plans are like this: the Trial and the earlier Personal plan. Every current paid plan — Starter, Pro, Team, Scale and Enterprise — includes the AI agent, and the message names them.

Check first

  • Which plan does Billing show? On the Trial or the earlier Personal plan this message is expected: choose a current paid plan to use the AI agent. On any other plan it should not appear — send the details to support.
  • Are you a teammate? AI runs on the owner’s plan, so check the owner’s plan, not yours.
  • Is the message actually about credits (“You’ve used your AI credits…”) or a key (“key required”)? Those are different docs — see Related.

Likely causes and fixes

  1. Starting an AI session → 403 “AI isn’t included on this account’s current plan (free).” The plan entitlement is checked when the session is created. Fix: choose a plan in the dashboard. Every current plan includes the AI agent on your own key plus monthly credits.

  2. Turning on bundled AI in settings → same 403. A plan with no AI refuses the consent switch too. Upgrading is the fix; no setting enables AI on a plan that does not include it.

  3. Adding your own provider key does not help on a plan without the AI agent. On such a plan AI is refused whatever the source, credits or your own key. Saving or testing a key, and choosing credits or your own key as the AI source, are refused with the same 403 on such a plan. Upgrade first, then add the key if you want to run on it.

  4. Just upgraded, still refused. Confirm Billing shows the new plan active; restart the desktop app so it re-reads your account. If the plan is active and the message persists, contact support.

  5. Your paid plan ended, and the message says “Your plan has ended. Choose a plan to use Driftstack’s AI again.” A paid plan that is cancelled or runs out (crypto) puts the account back on the unpaid tier. (A failed renewal payment is refused with “Your last payment didn’t go through…” instead; see Payment failed.) Its AI is then refused with that 402 instead of this 403. Fix: choose a plan in the dashboard. See AI credits used up.

If it still fails

Press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include: account email, the plan shown in Billing, whether you are the owner or a teammate, and the exact error text with its tier value. A person checks the plan record.
