Tax / VAT on invoices

You might be here because: “why is there VAT on my invoice” · “do prices include VAT” · “how do I add my VAT number” · “reverse charge invoice” · “sales tax” · “tax ID on my invoice” · “VAT on a crypto payment” · “I’m a business, can I get an invoice without VAT” · “what currency are prices in” · “All prices in USD”

Short answer

Prices are in US dollars and VAT or sales tax is added where it applies. On card payments VAT is added automatically at checkout, based on your billing country, for EU customers; on crypto payments the price is quoted without VAT and the VAT is invoiced separately afterwards. Tax and invoicing are handled by the payment processor.

Check first

  • Card or crypto? The two are taxed differently (below).
  • Where is the customer established? Customers in the Netherlands, businesses included, pay Dutch VAT (BTW, currently 21%). Only a business in another EU country with a valid VAT number is invoiced without VAT (the reverse charge). Customers outside the EU are invoiced without Dutch VAT and handle any local tax themselves.
  • The invoice itself is in the billing portal: dashboard → Billing → Manage in … portal.

Likely causes and fixes

  1. “There is VAT on my card invoice.” Expected for EU customers: VAT is added at checkout from your billing country. The plan prices on the plan page are before tax.

  2. “I paid by crypto and got a second invoice.” A crypto payment is quoted VAT-exclusive; for EU customers the VAT is invoiced separately in EUR after the payment confirms, and you receive a follow-up payment link for that amount.

  3. “I am a business with a VAT number.” It depends on where your business is established. A business in the Netherlands pays Dutch VAT (BTW) like any other Dutch customer; a VAT number does not remove it. A business in another EU country with a valid VAT number is invoiced without VAT under the reverse charge, and accounts for VAT in its own country; you are responsible for checking that your VAT number is valid. Card checkout asks for your business tax ID (VAT number) and puts it on the invoice. Tax-ID details for card invoices are also kept in the billing portal. To add one after paying, or for a crypto payment, email [email protected] with your VAT number; a person applies it, and invoices already issued are handled case by case.

  4. “I am outside the EU.” You are invoiced without Dutch VAT (BTW), and you are responsible for any import VAT, GST, sales tax or similar tax in your own country. The invoice in the portal shows what was charged.

  5. “Are there other fees?” No setup, implementation or minimum-usage fees on any plan: the plan price, monthly or yearly, plus tax where it applies.

If it still fails

Press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include your account email, the invoice number and date, your billing country and, if you have one, your VAT number. Corrections to an issued invoice, a wrong billing country and reverse-charge requests are handled by a person; the assistant cannot see or change invoices.
