Where proxy passwords are stored (encrypted, never shown again)
You might be here because: “where is my proxy password stored” · “I can’t see my saved proxy password” · “stored leave blank to keep” · “is my VPN key safe” · “can support see my proxy password” · “how do I remove a saved password”
Short answer
Proxy secrets are write-only. A SOCKS5/HTTP password, an OpenVPN config (with its embedded certs and keys), and WireGuard private and pre-shared keys are encrypted at rest under your account’s key and are never returned in any response — not to the app, not to the API, not to support. In the app the field shows “Stored — leave blank to keep”.
Check first
- Signed in? Proxies and their secrets are on the account, not only on this computer.
Likely causes and fixes
- “I need to see the password.” You cannot — nobody can read it back. Look it up in your provider’s dashboard and re-enter it if unsure.
- Replacing a password. Type the new one into the Password field and save. Leaving it blank keeps the stored one; a blank password is refused.
- Removing a password. Tick Remove password in Edit — a blank field never clears it.
- Changing the address asks for the password again. A saved password is never sent to a new server on its own, so editing host, port or type requires re-entering it; changing only label or username does not.
- Locally. The app says credentials are encrypted on this device and saved encrypted to your account when the proxy is tested or used.
- “Saving proxy passwords is not available on this installation.” The installation has no encryption key configured, so passwords are refused rather than stored in the clear.
If it still fails
Questions about a suspected leak, an unexpected proxy.move_refused notification, or anyone else’s access to your account are security matters: a person handles them — press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include the time and what you saw, never the password.
