Sign in / sign up with Google or GitHub (cancelled, stale page, https only)

You might be here because: “google sign in doesn’t work” · “github login sends me back with an error” · “sign-in was cancelled or denied” · “this sign-in page is out of date” · “only works on a secure connection” · “sign-in started in a different browser or window” · “google button does nothing” · “I got a confirm a new sign-in method email”

Short answer

The Google/GitHub buttons open the provider, then return you to Driftstack’s callback page, which finishes the sign-in in the same browser window that started it. Almost every failure is fixed by returning to the sign-in page and starting again, in one browser, over https, with site storage allowed.

Check first

  • Same browser, same window/profile as where you clicked the button? The flow record lives in that browser and expires after 10 minutes.
  • Are you on https://? Provider sign-in refuses to start over plain http.
  • Is site storage allowed? The button refuses before anything starts, and the callback refuses to finish.

Likely causes and fixes

  1. “Google or GitHub didn’t complete the sign-in (it was cancelled or denied).” You closed or declined the provider’s screen. Return to sign-in and try again.
  2. “This sign-in link has already been used or has expired.” or “not valid for this dashboard.” Return to sign-in and start fresh; don’t reuse a callback URL.
  3. “This sign-in was started in a different browser or window, or took too long.” Start the sign-in in the browser you’ll finish in, within 10 minutes.
  4. “Sign-in was not started by this browser.” Same cause, reported by the server.
  5. “This sign-in page is out of date. Reload the sign-in page and try again.” A cached old page; hard-reload.
  6. “This sign-in provider is not available right now.” Use your password or an email link and retry later.
  7. “This Google or GitHub link was removed earlier.” Sign in with your password, or use the button on the sign-in page to link it again.
  8. A “Confirm a new sign-in method” email arrived. Your address already has an account without this provider linked; click the link to merge. The confirmation token is single-use and expires.
  9. A two-factor prompt appears after the provider. Normal: enter your code.
  10. “The request took too long, so we’re not sure what happened.” Don’t reload. Check your inbox for a confirmation email; if nothing arrives, return to sign-in.

If it still fails

Press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include the exact sentence, browser, and whether you’re signing up or in. Linking, unlinking, or merging providers on an account you can’t reach is an account-access matter for a person.
