‘An account with this email already exists’
You might be here because: “it says an account with this email already exists” · “can’t sign up, email already registered” · “I don’t remember signing up” · “signup won’t let me use my email” · “already exists but I don’t know the password”
Short answer
That email address already has a Driftstack account, so signup refuses to create a second one. Sign in instead, or reset the password if you don’t know it. The signup page gives you both links with your email already filled in.
Check first
- Did you sign up before — maybe with Google or GitHub, or with a magic link? All of those create the same kind of account.
- Are you on the right page? The message means “go to Sign in”, not “try again”.
Likely causes and fixes
- You have an account and forgot. Click Sign in in the banner; your email is carried over.
- You have an account but no password (or forgot it). Click reset your password in the banner; the forgot-password page prefills the address. See Forgot password / reset link problems.
- You previously signed in with Google or GitHub. Use that button on the sign-in page instead of creating a password account. If the address already has an account without that link, Driftstack emails you a “Confirm a new sign-in method” link to merge it.
- You see this in the desktop app. The app shows the same sentence, “An account with this email already exists. Sign in instead.”. Sign in with the browser from the setup screen.
If it still fails
If you’re sure you never created an account and believe someone else used your address, that is an account-access question for a person: press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include the address and roughly when you tried. The assistant cannot look up, merge, or delete accounts.
